How to Walk a Reactive Dog

Walking your dog is something that should be enjoyable. It is important that you get to have some fun time with your dog, enjoying the outdoors and breathing fresh air. However, you will be disappointed to find out that not all walks are as smooth as you would wish them to be. If your dog is reactive; you can expect that some walks will end up being a nightmare. Whether your dog has always been sensitive or has recently become reactive due to a bad experience, here are some dog walking tricks that you can use to gain the best from your walk.

Do not React
You may be walking your pet when another dog turns up unexpectedly, and your loving pet turns into a snarling, growling pest. You can never know how dogs communicate but when this happens you sure can figure out that all is not well. Most dog owners will first react by panicking and especially if they have experienced such an incident in the past. Your dog will calm down if you remain as calm as possible.

Act Fast and Plan Ahead
If you sight a dog approaching, be quick to cross to the other side of the road to avoid any contact between the two dogs. Your pet is still likely to react, but continue walking away confidently and calmly and praise your dog if he remains silent. If you find yourself in a situation that you were not prepared for, quickly make a U-turn. For dogs, it is often a case of out of sight; out of mind. If your dog seems a little resistant to walking away, encourage him to run a little and praise him for keeping up with the pace.

Get his Attention
At times, the only way you can control your dog and prevent him from reacting is by getting his focus. If you see another dog approaching, take your dog to one side and practice the lessons that you have already taught him. Ask your dog to sit and stay, while focusing his attention on some form of treat. If your dog is still likely to react, consider blocking his line of vision until the other dog passes.

Have the Right Equipment
It makes no sense walking a dog that is likely to slip its harness. It is important that you ensure the safety of your dogs while walking them. The two hounds design dog harness ensures that your dog does not pull and can’t easily escape. It offers a secure way of ensuring that you have better control over your dog if anything happens.

Know why your Dog Reacts
You know your dog better than anybody else, which means that you are a better position of understanding his body language. Knowing, why your dog reacts, helps you address the problem better.
